Tessa's uncle, Don Alejandro, arrives from Spain, vowing to bring justice to his brother's killer. He has heard rumors in Spain that Don Alvarado was murdered. The first thing he sees on his way to his niece’s hacienda is the Queen of Swords in battle with some of Montoya's men. The don interferes and the Queen is forced to flee or face her uncle with a sword.

Alejandro has used his influence to get the Viceroy in Monterey to order Montoya to investigate his brother's death. He intends to avenge his brother and have Tessa sell the Alvarado hacienda to one of the local dons and return with her uncle to Spain.

In order to throw suspicion off himself, Montoya has Grisham plant "evidence" that one of the local dons is the murderer. Montoya has been in conflict with Don Ricardo and figures he can kill two birds with one stone by having him accused of the crime. Alejandro believes the evidence and challenges Ricardo to a duel. When Tessa steps between the two men, Don Alejandro is shocked by his niece's actions, accusing her of betraying her family.

Will Tessa risk losing the only family she has left to save an innocent man?
