uncle, Don Alejandro, arrives from Spain, vowing to bring justice to his
brother's killer. He has heard rumors in Spain that Don Alvarado was
murdered. The first thing he sees on his way to his niece’s hacienda is
the Queen of Swords in battle with some of Montoya's men. The don
interferes and the Queen is forced to flee or face her uncle with a sword.
has used his influence to get the Viceroy in Monterey to order Montoya to
investigate his brother's death. He intends to avenge his brother and have
Tessa sell the Alvarado hacienda to one of the local dons and return with
her uncle to Spain.
In order to
throw suspicion off himself, Montoya has Grisham plant
"evidence" that one of the local dons is the murderer. Montoya
has been in conflict with Don Ricardo and figures he can kill two birds
with one stone by having him accused of the crime. Alejandro believes the
evidence and challenges Ricardo to a duel. When Tessa steps between the
two men, Don Alejandro is shocked by his niece's actions, accusing her of
betraying her family.
