An Englishwoman, Camilla Wentworth and two slaves – a brother and sister – are discovered attempting to flee from her abusive husband's ship. Agatha, the sister, is shot while Jeffery and Camilla escape and are given refuge at the Alvarado hacienda.

Captain Wentworth claims his wife was kidnapped by his fleeing slaves and goes to Montoya to get his aid in reclaiming his wife and property. Montoya is none too enthusiastic about aiding Wentworth, but when the Captain offers gold, he agrees to look into the situation.

At the Alvarado hacienda, Camilla learns that Robert Helm is living in Santa Helena. Helm is her former fiancé and both Helm and Camilla seem far from over each other – much to Tessa's concern.

Against Tessa's advice, Camilla goes to Montoya for assistance in escaping her husband. Montoya agrees to aid her, but then agrees to turn over the runaway wife to her husband in exchange for one of Wentworth's canons.

Will Camilla, Jeffery and Agatha escape from the odious Capt. Wentworth and will Helm choose to flee with his former love or stay in Santa Helena?
