Montoya pulls out all the stops to greet the new Ambassador from the King of Spain. The Ambassador arrives complete with his own newspaper man and quickly announces he has come to Santa Helena to bring the Queen of Swords' head back in a glass jar and collect the king’s reward. Ramirez is an arrogant ambitious politician with close connections to the Spanish crown. He makes no secret of his plans to take over Montoya’s position in Santa Helena once he has shown up the Colonel by capturing/killing the Queen.

Ambassador Ramirez arrogantly shows even less concern for the rights of people than Montoya, taking over the Alvarado hacienda for his own use and attempting to abuse Marta. The Ambassador quickly enlisted Grisham in his plans against Montoya and in his plot to destroy the Queen.

While Ramirez plots to kill the Queen and have Montoya recalled to Spain in disgrace, the Queen and Montoya attempt to protect themselves and Santa Helena from the Ambassador.

Will Santa Helena fall into the hands of a man who makes Montoya look like a benevolent ruler? Or has the Ambassador underestimated both Montoya and the Queen?
